HBO Max is Dropping One Word from It's Name, And It's Not Hard to Guess Which It Is

HBO Max is reportedly changing its name yet again. The change is said to drop one of the two words that make up the streaming service's name.

Can you guess which one?

No, the streaming service will not simply be called HBO. Instead, it will reportedly be called Max. Yes, you read that right. It may just be Max moving forward.

HBO Max is Changing Its Name Again

The possibility of HBO Max changing its name to just Max "comes as HBO Max is merging with Discovery+ this spring," according to a report by Gizmodo. The report highlights that this is not the first time HBO Max will be changing its name.

The streaming service was initially known HBO Go. It was then changed to HBO Now before being changed to its current name, which is HBO Max.

So why the name change? According to a report by The Wrap, Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO Max, is said to be worried that having the word "HBO" in the name is actually turning off potential subscribers.

It should be noted that the name change, as of press time, has yet to be confirmed. Gizmodo notes that any official names changes may be made during a press event scheduled to be held in April.

HBO Max Merging with Discovery+

The Gizmodo's report also notes that "Discovery+ will continue to operate as its own streaming service alongside its combined presence on HBO Max, potentially bringing its 96.1 million paying subscribers who also have HBO Max, to the platform."

Prices will reportedly stay the same for Discovery+ at $15 per month for the ad-free option. The higher tiered option that offers better video and more features will likewise stay at $20 per month.

However, the same cannot be said for the prices of HBO Max. Due to the fact that it is getting more features as well as better video quality, prices are said to change to $20 per month.

Current HBO Originals on HBO Max

While numbers show that HBO Max trails behind Netflix and Disney+ when it comes to viewership, the streaming service is home to a number of HBO originals that have been a hit with the audience.

Leading the pack is none other than "The Last of Us," which premiered in January. Starring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey, it is the live-action adaptation of the 2013 video game of the same name. The HBO series has received critical acclaim.

Another HBO original that can be streamed on HBO Max is none other than "Succession," which first premiered 2018. This satirical comedy-drama's fourth and final season will begin airing on March 26.

Other examples of HBO originals that the audience can stream on HBO Max include "Perry Mason" and "Hacks."
