Those without a PlayStation 5 yet now have a good reason to wait some more.
Sony is reportedly developing a Pro version of its PlayStation 5 gaming console already, with it presumably coming with better hardware, new features, and even better performance overall.
Sony released the current PS5 model in 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic; the company has just recovered from the shortages that made the gaming console scarce.
PlayStation 5 Pro Details
Insider Gaming reporter Tom Henderson mentioned in an article that his sources revealed that Sony is currently developing a Pro version of the PlayStation 5, with the company aiming to release it sometime in late 2024.
Unfortunately, the PS5 Pro is not the model that comes with a detachable disc drive Henderson previously reported, though this variant may be sold alongside the PS5 Pro. Regardless, this PS5 model with a detachable drive and the PS5 Pro is bound to make the original variants irrelevant, with Sony phasing them out in the foreseeable future.
Other PS5 variants aside, the PS5 Pro will presumably come with an "accelerated" ray tracing performance in video games, per @Onion00048, citing a recently published patent by PlayStation architect Mark Cerny.
Additionally, the PS5 Pro may come with better visuals, performance, and speeds, though there isn't much information out there to support this hypothesis apart from past precedence.
You may remember that the PlayStation 4 Pro was the better version of the regular PS4, with the latter having better visuals, hardware, and performance, per Tech Radar.
Unfortunately, Henderson's sources didn't mention anything about the PS5 Pro's specifications, preventing anyone from gauging how different the original and Pro variants of the PS5 will be. However, if Henderson's report is anything to go by, the gaming community might hear from Sony soon.
Industry insider Jeff Grubb mentioned during the Game Mess Decided podcast that Sony might be planning to host a new PlayStation Showcase "before E3," with the company being rumored to show off games and talk about new hardware during the event.
While Henderson and Insider Gaming have been reliable sources of information for all things gaming, it is important to remember that the information they gave about the PS5 Pro is rumors at best. As such, taking a grain of salt while considering the information they gave is highly recommended.
PlayStation 5 Pro Development Skepticism
PlayStation users are skeptical about having a new PS5 variant released in 2023, followed by a PS5 Pro in late 2024, per Comicbook Gaming. Some people in Reset Era even suggested that releasing a Pro version so early after a new variant's release is unnecessary and senseless since Sony is still phasing out the PS4 following the PS5's recovery from its numerous shortages.
However, the original PS5 is almost three years old as of press time, and if Henderson's report is accurate, it will turn four by the time its Pro version is out in the market, meaning that Sony is highly likely to release a PS5 Pro or at least a new PS5 variant by late 2024.
