With the new plugins added by OpenAI this week, ChatGPT will be much more than a mere chatbot, allowing it to access real-time information on the Internet that will prevent it from giving outdated responses.
Furthermore, the new plugins will connect ChatGPT directly to third-party services so that it can perform different actions on behalf of the user.
New Plugins Will Keep ChatGPT Updated to Recent Events That Happened Since Last User Interaction
The new ChatGPT plugins will improve the reliability of the AI chat, especially when it comes to queries pertaining to recent events. As per Engadget, the new plugins will allow ChatGPT to be supplied with information from an ongoing sports match as it happens. This includes the real-time scores of a sports team or the time remaining in the game. Before this, ChatGPT could only provide reliable answers about events that occurred in the past.
Aside from the current game scores, the ChatGPT new plugin will keep the chatbot updated on breaking news and present stock prices. Another impressive part of this new update is that ChatGPT can now access "knowledge-based" details from different companies and even from users' personal cloud memory.
According to OpenAI, the new plugins work to connect the knowledge that ChatGPT picked up on in the past and the things that have happened since then. Therefore, the AI chat can avoid giving questionable answers to questions that are based on current events. The OpenAI team noted that the new plugins "not only enhance the model's utility but also enable users to assess the trustworthiness of the model's output and double-check its accuracy, potentially mitigating risks related to over-reliance."

ChatGPT Can Now Perform Specific Actions, Thanks to New Plugins
With the new plugins for ChatGPT, it can easily perform tasks when linked to third-party applications. Specifically, developers can define APIs pertaining to their preferred third-party services, then the plugins will allow ChatGPT to interact with these APIs. Hence, the chatbot will perform specific actions instead of the user doing the work, as per Venture Beat.
OpenAI's announcement for the new ChatGPT plugins was positively received by developers and tech enthusiasts alike, noting that this is the start of ChatGPT's transformation into a "developer platform."
Aside from the notes for the new plugins, OpenAI also announced that developers who are on the waitlist can use their documentation on how to build their own plugins for ChatGPT. Companies that have already created their own ChatGPT plugins are Expedia, Instacart, Kayak, OpenTable and Zapier.
OpenAI mentioned that they would allow more users and developers to its waitlist "over time." Nonetheless, the company already paved the way to revolutionizing ChatGPT as developers can make their own plugins and distribute them to users to provide service. Venture Beat also noted that OpenAI's effort is similar to Apple's App Store allowing third-party developers to distribute their own apps using its platform.
