Documenting for healthcare providers may soon become easier.
Amazon and popular technology company 3M recently entered into a partnership to use generative AI to make documenting for healthcare providers easier.
The partnership between the two companies aims to further transform the patient-physician experience and place the focus back on the patient.
Amazon-3M Partnership Details
Amazon and 3M, or Amazon Web Services (AWS) and 3M Health Information Systems (HIS) to be specific, partnered with each other to help accelerate the advancement and innovation of 3M's M*Modal ambient intelligence, per 3M's announcement.
3M mentioned that its M*Modal ambient intelligence service is a tool that utilizes conversational AI and ambient intelligence to automate clinical documentation, making it "a byproduct of a patient's visit and not a separate, burdensome task for the physician," according to the company's website.
The partnership could be a boon to healthcare workers nationwide as more than 300,000 clinicians prefer to use 3M's conversational AI platform. It supports cloud-based solutions for real-time speech recognition, which is compatible with more than 250 electronic health records, and for ambient clinical documentation through its M*Modal Fluency Direct and M*Modal Fluency Align solutions, respectively.
The popular tech company will also use AWS Machine Learning and generative AI services, which include Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Comprehend Medical, and Amazon Transcribe Medical, to further expedite, refine and scale 3M's ambient clinical documentation and virtual assistant solutions' delivery.
As a result, the pairing of 3M's cloud-based clinical intelligence with AWS' Machine Learning service will enable 3M ambient clinical documentation solutions to support the task of documenting patient interaction in compliance with applicable laws and guidelines more quickly.
For instance, pairing Amazon Bedrock's generative AI service with 3M's Fluency Align will provide the latter company with a platform that makes it easier for clinicians to automate accurate, complete, and structured notes in the electronic health records and create quality-reviewed notes. It will also further scale and accelerate 3M's innovation in conversational AI to deliver "even greater flexibility, choice and usability to physician end users."
Pioneers In Revolutionizing The Clinical Documentation Process
Amazon and 3M are not the only ones partnering to further improve the documentation process healthcare providers use. Microsoft previously announced it would use its expertise with ChatGPT to create a "more dynamic clinical documentation process" through Dragon, one of the medical industry's leading clinical dictation tools.
Forbes' report on the matter also mentioned that these partnerships are a welcome fact for healthcare providers nationwide, citing a 2016 study in the "Annals of Internal Medicine" which found that for every hour physicians provide direct clinical face time to patients, they would need to spend two additional hours to create electronic health records and other desk work within the clinic day.
Garri Garrison, 3M HIS President, mentioned that the innovation, security, and reliability of AWS help the company accelerate the delivery of high-quality clinical documentation.
