How to Use Technology to Catch a Cheater

Studies have shown that up to 25% of married men and up to 15% of married women cheat on their spouses. Statistics aren't enough to say that your spouse is or isn't cheating, but you might have reason to believe they are. They might be acting differently, working late at the office, or being more secretive with their phone. Getting proof of infidelity can be challenging, but technology makes it easier than you might have thought.

Pay Attention to Their Snapchat Emojis

Snapchat is often considered an ideal platform for cheating due to its message expiration features. As a result, Snapchat cheating is possible if you've noticed that your spouse has been acting differently.

While messages expire after 24 hours, taking possible evidence with them, you might be curious about how you could know if your spouse is using this platform to cheat. Pay attention to their friend emojis.

Particular emojis can appear beside usernames based on interactions. Some emojis can be more telling than others. For example, a yellow heart can mean you and another Snapchatter send the most snaps to each other, while a red heart means you've been each other's best friend for at least two weeks. If you spot a pink double heart, you've been a Snapchatter's best friend for two months or more, showing real commitment to daily messaging.

If you notice hearts beside particular usernames in your spouse's friends list, you can gain insight into their Snapping habits and who they spend the most time talking to.

Use People Search Tools

Seeing heart emojis beside particular Snapchatters can provide you with the first piece of evidence to believe your spouse might be cheating on you, but a people search tool might further confirm it.

Such tools allow you to look up a person's public records online, including all their social media accounts, phone numbers, and email addresses. With this information, you might learn about social media accounts, dating apps, messaging platforms, and whether they have other phone numbers. You might not have evidence in the form of damning messages with other people, but you have new details that might strengthen your belief that your spouse isn't being faithful.

Notice Their Phone Behaviors

Most cheaters don't want to get caught. They might believe they get the best of both worlds - a loving spouse and a friend on the side, and they want to keep both. As a result of not wanting to get caught, they might protect the device they use to cheat as if their life depended on it.

If you've noticed that their phone behaviors have changed or become suspicious, this might be a sign of cheating. They might lock their phone now, whereas they didn't lock it in the past, or they might no longer leave their devices lying around for you to find.

Some victims of cheating even discovered that their spouses changed their passwords when previously they could access their loved one's phones whenever they wanted. These behaviors don't guarantee that a spouse is being unfaithful, but they can be worth paying attention to if you already have reason to believe that you're being cheated on.

View Location History

People can easily hide their locations from their spouses by turning off location sharing, but navigation history might not be something they expect to need to take care of while hiding their cheating.

Something as simple as entering an address into the Google Maps app or browser might start a location trail you can use to unravel their lies and deceit. You might check the 'previous destinations' menu on their navigation system if they're a Google user and the Google Timeline feature in Google Maps if they have an Android device.

There's even an option for Apple users. It can be as simple as exploring the 'Significant Locations' data in their Privacy and Location Services settings to see where they spend most of their time outside of where you know they will be.

Push Notification Changes

By default, most mobile devices show a snippet of what's included in a notification. Snapchat shows a name, while Facebook and text messages often show a name and part of a message. To stop this information from being shown, users must actively change their settings to hide the contents of a message or prevent notifications from appearing on the screen altogether.

If you've been with your spouse for some time, you likely already know how their phone is set up and how they receive social media notifications and text messages. Any changes to this information might give you a reason to believe your spouse is trying to hide something from you.

Rely On Location Technology

People who trust their spouses don't always need to know where they are. They likely know their routine, anyway, and know they will remain faithful. However, utilizing location technology might be necessary to catch a cheating spouse if you already suspect infidelity.

Most devices already include location technology by default. Unless your spouse has turned location sharing off, you might be able to use a 'find my phone' app, Snapchat maps, or a similar service to locate where your spouse is at any given moment.

Using location technology, you might be able to catch your spouse out in a lie. For example, they might say they're working late, but their location technology puts them at a local restaurant or an address you don't recognize. This might be yet another piece of evidence you need to confirm that your spouse is being unfaithful.

Check Auto-Fill On Search Engines

A clever cheater using dating sites and hook-up services will attempt to hide their infidelity by clearing their search engine history. This means that if you decide to check out the sites they've been visiting, you won't find what you're looking for.

However, not finding the websites you suspect doesn't mean your spouse hasn't visited them. Start typing out each letter of the alphabet and see which sites prepopulate. Search engines remember the websites you've visited and want to help by filling in the blanks. Typing in one letter and having a dating site prepopulate can be a damning sign that the site has been visited before.

The best way to tell that your spouse has been unfaithful is by catching them in the act. However, people search tools, Snapchat emojis, and location data might all provide the evidence you need to approach them with the facts and demand an explanation.
