Bizarre Bug Breaks Messaging Between Android, iPhone Users

iPhone and Android users are having difficulties communicating with one another.

Recent reports on social media platforms have revealed that iPhone and Android users have been experiencing a bug that prevents them from communicating with each other through SMS text messages.

Fortunately, the problem is an isolated issue, though it is unknown if it's being worked on or not.

Android-iPhone Communication Loss Details

Android phones and iPhones have unique ways of communicating with other devices of the same kind. iPhones have Apple's iMessage to keep communications between iPhones secure, encrypted, and enjoyable due to its other features, per Apple.

Meanwhile, Android phones have RCS messaging that matches Apple's iMessage in every aspect. According to the search giant, RCS messaging can be encrypted while SMS doesn't. This difference means hackers and cybercriminals see and read a user's SMS messages when their phones are compromised.

However, when it comes to communicating with each other (Android - iPhone communications) users of both phones would need to be content with SMS messaging, RCS messaging's less secure predecessor. Unfortunately, that's where the problem began for some iPhone users.

Multiple iPhone users took to Reddit to raise the alarm about a bug that affects text messages between the two platforms; they saw that the messages they received from Android or Google Voice users end with an additional "+" at the beginning of the phone number, per 9to5Mac.

This additional plus sign makes the Messages app on iPhones or the carrier classify the number as international, splitting the chat into a separate conversation and preventing iPhone users from replying to them; the messages fail to go through to the sender.

iPhone users could respond as normal in the original thread, but when the Android user responds, the new message is put under the same thread with the incorrect international phone number.

Thankfully, the issue is only affecting iPhone users that have AT&T as their carrier, though it is still unclear if the same issue is also affecting other carriers like Verizon and Sprint.

According to Android Police, the bug could be due to a backend issue from AT&T's side.

Some iPhone users suggest resetting the phone's network settings to fix the issue, though results may vary. Others believe that Apple should switch to RCS messaging as well to prevent this issue from happening again, though it is unlikely.

Why Hasn't Apple Switch To RCS Messaging?

Apple is reluctant to part with its SMS messaging capabilities for one good reason: its wish to keep its iMessage service unique. A previous 9to5Mac report mentioned that Apple sees no incentive to adopt RCS messaging, though the company did make minor improvements to SMS communications between iPhone and Android devices.

Another reason is that iOS users are not asking Apple to "put a lot of energy into [adopting RCS]," per Apple CEO Tim Cook, in his reply to an audience member during a Q&A portion of Kara Swisher's Code Conference talk in Sept. 2022.
