The ending to The Callisto Protocol is coming to gamers with an unexpected twist.
Video game developer Striking Distance Studio recently mentioned on the game's official Twitter page it is releasing the final chapter of The Callisto Protocol in late June, though it will be a PlayStation exclusive for some time.
The Callisto Protocol was released to the public on Dec. 2, 2022, with critics and gamers giving it a lukewarm reception due to its middling experience it delivered, per its Metacritic and user score.
The Callisto Protocol Final Transmission Details
Striking Distance Studio recently mentioned on Twitter that The Callisto Protocol's last chapter, Final Transmission, is set for release on June 29, though PlayStation gamers can experience it two days earlier than others, meaning they can get the game's last chapter on June 27.
While Striking Distance Studio's tweet didn't reveal much about the game's final chapter, the video that came with it showed a short teaser featuring game protagonist Jacob Lee waking up and meeting a big robot making its way toward him, per IGN.
As such, the big robot shown in the teaser may be one of - if not - the central character in the game's finale; it may also reveal how Jacob survived his encounter with (SPOILERS!) Leon Ferris and what he had been doing since the main story's ending. Gamers who played the game may recall that Jacob met a pre-alpha Ferris after forcing his companion, Dani, into an escape pod to save her, claiming he belongs in Black Iron Prison for bringing the Biophage virus to Callisto, per Dexerto.
Regardless, Striking Distance Studios promised gamers that The Callisto Protocol's ending would be "heart-pounding" and terrifying, per Game Rant.
Striking Distance's wording seems to imply that Final Transmission will be the game's only story DLC, though the game may receive non-story DLC after its release in the foreseeable future, like the game's official hardcore mode and Outer Way skins, which it received in February.
Similarly, the video game developer has yet to reveal the DLC's price tag, though it is part of The Callisto Protocol's $29.99 season pass.
The Callisto Protocol Details
The Callisto Protocol is a survival horror game advertised as the spiritual successor to the Dead Space series. It is set 300 years in the future, when humanity has reached one of Jupiter's moons, Callisto, establishing Black Iron Prison in the process.
Players take on the role of Jacob Lee, a man imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. However, his arrival at Black Iron Prison meant the beginning of the end for its inmates and staff, which turned into hideous monstrosities due to an unknown virus.
Players have to guide Jacob through the fallen prison to escape its horrors - in doing so, he would soon learn the truth behind the prison's origins and the people working behind the scenes.
Critics and gamers had a lukewarm reception of the game due to its underperforming and underdelivering; it wasn't as scary as advertised, nor was it fun to play for many gamers due to its unsatisfying, tedious combat and linear level design, per Tom's Guide and Custom Controllers.
