Sifting through WhatsApp messages might get easier soon.
The company behind the popular secure messaging app is reportedly working on a chat list filter to it, allowing users to see messages by their classification.
The feature is still under development; WhatsApp could release it sometime in the future.
WhatsApp Chat List Filter
WhatsApp's current app layout features three tabs for users to choose from: the "Chats" header, which displays all the chats they had with other people, "Status," which allows them to change or edit their status for people to see and "Calls," which shows a timeline of the outgoing and incoming calls the app registered.
Unfortunately, filtering messages to see them sorted through classifications is impossible, forcing users to sift through their entire Chat tab to find what they're looking for or searching for it.
Thankfully, WhatsApp might be providing an easier way to find specific chats. According to WABetaInfo, the company is working on a chat list filter to improve user experience, as spotted on the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.14.17 update from the Google Play Store.
According to the screenshot about the feature the publication took, WhatsApp's chat list filter comes with four filters for users to choose from: All, Unread, Personal, and Business. The first two filters are self-explanatory, while the Business filter allows users to see only messages from the various companies with a WhatsApp Business account.
The Personal filter is for conversations users have with their contacts and other WhatsApp users on the platform. While the filter for group chats is absent from the feature, they might appear under the Personal filter instead; group chats play an important role in communication for many WhatsApp users, and having a convenient way to filter and access them would greatly enhance the app's overall user experience.
Since WhatsApp is still developing the feature and has yet to release it to beta testers, the company could possibly add the filter later in its development process. Regardless, the feature's beta test may take a while to begin, and it would take even longer for WhatsApp to release it to the public.
Interestingly, WABetaInfo posted a concept regarding a new interface for the app, which included a filter button to address the problem of accessing the current filtering feature - a concept WhatsApp might be using as inspiration for its chat list filter.
Other Upcoming WhatsApp Features
WhatsApp's chat list filter is one of many features the company is working on as of press time. You may recall that the company recently released a redesigned sticker and GIF picker for iOS devices, allowing users to search for their favorite stickers and GIF reactions more easily than before.
Apart from that, WhatsApp is also working on adding the ability to upload and download high-quality videos through the app (with minimal compression) and pin and unpin a message automatically after a set period has passed.
