Samsung announces 5.2-inch Galaxy Grand 2 mid-range phablet

Samsung has just announced its latest phablet, the mid-range 5.25-inch Galaxy Grand 2.

As the tech world watches the phablet trend grow more and more popular, its top player is making sure it covers its bases by offering a number of devices that fall into the phablet category. The company recently shipped the third iteration of the smartphone that started this new craze with the Galaxy Note 3. Samsung also has a 6.3-inch smartphone with the Galaxy Mega 6.3, which is currently available from AT&T and Sprint, and the company has just launched yet another phablet.

Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy Grand 2, the successor to last year's Galaxy Grand. The second-generation offers some spec bumps, but its main feature will be its price. Samsung is going after the mid-range phablet/smartphone market by offering a handset with a display close in size to the Note 3, but that will be offered at a much lower price, as evidenced by the specs of the new smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 features a 5.25-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 and a pixel density of 280 pixels per inch (ppi). It is powered by 1.2GHz quad-core processor and packs in 1.5GB of RAM. It's running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and Samsung's TouchWiz Nature UI. It ships with 8GB of internal storage and a microSD expansion slot that will support up to 64GB microSD cards.

Samsung has included an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and auto focus and a 1.9-megapixel front facing camera for video chat. When it comes to wireless connectivity, you'll find a 3G HSPA radio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS + Glonass and dual SIM slots. Its dimensions are 5.78 x 2.96 x 0.35 inches (146.8 x 75.3 x 8.9 mm) and weighs 5.75 oz (163 g). Samsung has also packed a large 2,600 mAh battery, which it claims will provide up to 13 hours of talk time. The Galaxy Grand 2 will be offered in choice of white, black, or pink.

The Galaxy Round 2 also comes with Samsung-exclusive apps and features designed to enhance your experience. Some of these include:

  • Story Album, which allows you to organize pictures by timeline, print albums and more.
  • S Translator, a built-in translating service that will allow you to get instantaneous translations.
  • S Travel, which makes planning your next trip a breeze and keeps all of your travel information in one place on the Galaxy Grand 2.
  • Sound & Shot will allow you to record up to 9 seconds of audio with your photos.
  • The Samsung Hub is your one stop shop to access Samsung services, which include music, videos, games, and more.
  • Samsung Link makes pairing up all of your devices a simple task and will allow you to access music, videos, documents and more from wherever you are.

Samsung has not provided any details yet on when it will make the Galaxy Grand 2 available, at what price, and on which carrier partners. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we hear more.
