Is the Great Resignation over? While 2021 saw over 47 million Americans voluntarily quit their jobs without having a new position lined up, it seems the pendulum is swinging firmly in favor of talent retention in 2023.

The reason for this is two-fold: salaries and workplace flexibility increased, and time spent out of the workforce allowed workers to reassess and move to jobs in companies they really want to work for.

In fact, according to data compiled by The Conference Board, 62.3% of U.S. workers reported being satisfied in their jobs in 2022, up from 60.2% in 2021 and 56.8% in 2020. This number is even higher for those who found a new job during the pandemic at 65.7%.

Reasons to be happy

Those who work a hybrid work model are the most satisfied group, compared to fully remote workers or those who have been mandated back to the office.

Workplace benefits including healthcare, sick day policies, family leave and flexibility are also named as contributing factors when it comes to improved workplace satisfaction.

The availability of learning and development opportunities has also increased satisfaction across the board according to the report.

However, the study also found that women are significantly less satisfied than their male counterparts, and pay and benefits gaps within the workplace still need to be addressed to make career progression more equitable.

These include sick day policy, bonus structures, family leave, mental health benefit policies and effective communication channels within the workplace.

Closing the gap

These contributing factors are also holding women back when it comes to climbing the career ladder and the Women in the Workplace 2022 report found that 2022 was the eighth consecutive year where the "broken rung" prevented women from being promoted.

"For every 100 men who are promoted from entry-level roles to manager positions, only 87 women are promoted, and only 82 women of color are promoted. As a result, men significantly outnumber women at the manager level, and women can never catch up. There are simply too few women to promote to senior leadership positions," the report's authors state.

The good news is that several companies and large organizations are actively working to not only repair the broken rung, but make workplace culture more desirable for men and women at all stages of their career.

So if you feel like the company you currently work for is leaving you feeling dissatisfied and unfulfilled, it could be time to look for an opportunity elsewhere. If that is the case, the Tech Times Job Board features thousands of jobs in progressive companies that are actively hiring, like the three below.
