The first time fans heard about the Borderlands game getting a movie adaptation was back in 2015, and they have been waiting for a trailer and a release date for years. While there is no trailer yet, the release has already been announced on Twitter.
Borderlands Will Premiere in August 2024
The good news is that we finally have a release date for the movie. The bad news is that it won't be arriving any time soon. According to the game's Twitter account, we won't see the movie on the big screen until August 9th, 2024, which is more than a year from now.
A lot of people are expecting good things from the movie especially with it being star-studded. The film was directed by Eli Roth, who is known for his movies like the "Hostel" franchise, "The Green Inferno," "Death Wish," and more.
The casts that are already known are Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jack Black as Calptrap, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, and Arian Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, as mentioned in Engadget.
Reports say that the movie finished filming back in June 2021, which was two years ago. It was not mentioned why the production took so long to even announce a release date, but delays in video game to movie adaptations are basically normal now.
It may be good news that they are taking their time to release the movie to make sure that it meets the expectations of fans, especially since the video game franchise already has a huge fanbase, and fans are usually more critical of video game adaptations.
Kevin Hart says that the fanbase that follows the game is already huge and unreal, but that they don't have a "clear understanding of how close" they're coming to the game. The actor claims that it is "truly unbelievable" and that the movie looks like the game, as reported by Collider.
It Comes With a Lot of Pressure
It's not only the anticipation that the production team has to deal with. There are also factors like how game fans are very critical of how adaptations turn out, as well as the fact that video game adaptations are usually loved or hated, nothing neutral.
In the past few years, several failures have even brought on a theory that video game adaptations are cursed. Luckily for us, that's not the case. We have since seen successful adaptations like "Detective Pikachu" and "Sonic the Hedgehog."
Animated adaptations have also seen the level of success that movies have, such as "Arcane" based on the MOBA game League of Legends, as well as "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" based on the RPG game Cyberpunk 2077.
Having a well-known cast bodes well for the "Borderlands" movie, but that's still not a guarantee that it will be a success. For instance, the "Assassin's Creed" movie starred Michael Fassbender as the protagonist, Aguilar, who also played Magneto in the "X-Men" franchise, but that didn't save it from negative reviews.
