Kanye West returns to Twitter again.
The popular artist, now known as Ye, returns to the app now known as X after the website's owner rebrands it from its previous identity after being suspended for the first time.
X owner Elon Musk previously suspended his account for the first time since his takeover due to Ye's antisemitic content.
Ye's Return to Twitter (X)
Ye's return to Twitter comes as a surprise to many people. In Dec. 2022, Musk suspended the rapper-songwriter's account for violating the platform's rules on inciting violence. This violence came in the form of his praise of Adolf Hitler during an interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on Infowars and an image of the Nazi Swastika merged with a Star of David.
He also showed his support for Balenciaga's ads sexualizing children through his past posts on the platform. Consequently, he condemned the resulting witch hunts and "cancel culture" around the fashion company.
While these actions earned him the suspension of his Twitter account back then, it seems Musk changed his mind. This decision came after he rebranded the microblogging platform into the website he wanted to have since his ownership of Paypal.
As a result, Ye now gets his X account back after a seven-month suspension, complete with its 31.6 million followers and a little gold verification badge, per Mashable. While we may never know why Musk or any of X.com's leadership reinstated Ye's account, it will not have some of the same privileges as it once did.
According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the singer couldn't monetize his posts via Musk's new revenue share scheme. In addition, he can no longer post hateful or antisemitic content on his account or risk another suspension or worse.
Ye has yet to post anything on his newly reinstated account as of press time, while his posts from 2020 remain deleted. It is unknown if he'll even use his X.com account despite its return, as he previously looked for other platforms to post his thoughts on.
X.com's Advertiser Problem
While the reinstatement of Ye's Twitter account is good news for the pop singer, it may be bad news for X.com's advertisers. You may recall that Musk recently threatened advertisers of removing their verified gold checkmark if they didn't spend $1,000 per month on ads.
Additionally, the rebranding of Twitter to X.com may be a risky move from a branding perspective as Twitter's logo is more iconic and identifiable than X.
While Ye got his account back only if he wouldn't post anything hateful or antisemitic, his actions in the past proved he would do so again if Ye uses his account as he once did. As such, Musk's decision could have an impact on advertisers' decision to place ads on X.com
Ye's account is not the only controversial account Musk reinstated in the past - He also unbanned Donald Trump ad avowed neo-Nazis from the platform, per Engadget.
