LG to join the mini smartphone game with powerful G2 Mini?

LG is reportedly going to join Samsung and HTC by introducing a mini-version of its flagship G2 smartphone. The mini smartphone is said be just as powerful as its full-sized counterpart.

We've seen smartphone makers expand their lineups by offering consumers a 'mini' version of the current flagship smartphone. Samsung introduced the Galaxy S4 Mini in July and HTC soon followed with its One Mini. The smaller handsets share similar a similar design to the flagship devices, but the reduction in size has also typically meant less powerful devices.

Apple bucked this trend when it unveiled the iPad mini with Retina display. The company decided to give its smaller tablet the same powerful 64-bit A7 processor found in its latest 9.7-inch iPad Air. Choosing a smaller iPad no longer meant giving up performance. A new report now claims that LG will follow Samsung and HTC by releasing a smaller version of its flagship G2, but, like Apple, the smaller device will be just as powerful as its full-sized sibling.

According to Techblog, LG is currently working on a smaller version of its G2. The device is codenamed G2 Mini but the site says that the name could change before the handset is released. The G2 Mini will have a smaller display than the 5.2-inch screen currently found on the G2. The smartphone will reportedly ship with a not-so-mini 4.7-inch display, but the site claims it cannot confirm at this point whether it will have 720p HD or 1080p Full HD resolution.

LG has reportedly chosen to use a powerful quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM, just like it currently uses in the G2. This would certainly give LG's G2 Mini a leg up in the specs department when compared to the dual-core Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and HTC One Minit. The site further speculates that the G2 Mini will probably be announced at CES 2014 in January.

As with all unconfirmed devices, we'll have to file this in the rumor category for now, but we'll be sure to update you when we hear more information on the G2 Mini.
