Dangers of Promotional Videos on TikTok

The research group's data showed that promotional videos featuring steroid-like drugs are commonly viewed by ages 18 to 24. However, the study notes that it could be higher as data views for minors are not available for viewing.

"A growing - and chronically understudied - crisis is being fomented among young boys and men, wrapped in toxic ideas of masculinity, strength, and misogyny, and amplified by unaccountable algorithms," CCDH CEO Imran Ahmed stated.

Drugs included in the report are anabolic-androgenic steroids, peptides and Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs).

Implication of Promoting Dangerous Drugs

Videos on TikTok can quickly get viral with the right amount of promotional gimmick. According to the FDA, SARMs are usually shown on TikTok as a way to easily improve physical appearance, gain muscle mass, and increase athletic performance. However, the FDA warned that SARMs are dangerous.

In the US, these drugs are considered illegal if sold as a dietary supplement. However, the restrictions have been failing to limit the promotion of these drugs.

The CCDH is now calling out TikTok to start enforcing rules that will ban the promotions of dangerous drugs for profit.
