Amazon Customers Complain After Receiving False Email Confirmations for Gift Card Purchases

Amazon customer service was bombarded all weekend with customers who are complaining after receiving email confirmations about gift card purchases they have never made.

Amazon Customers Receives False Gift Card Purchase

Affected customers were quick to take the issue on social media. Several customers posted their experiences and learned that some customers were able to receive the same confirmations despite not buying gift cards.

Based on the complaints, customers received a total of three confirmation emails each from Hotelscom, Google Play, and Mastercard. In addition, there were also reports of receiving three separate git card purchases from Amazon Prime. However, no purchase was detected in their Prime accounts.

Customers also voiced their data privacy concerns and were alarmed by the fact that their data might be hacked. Moreover, some customers found the email construction similar to phishing and scam emails. "Thanks for the early AM heart attack Amazon. Who needs caffeine?" affected customer wrote in a Facebook post.

Amazon Takes Action, Responds to the Issue

In a CNBC report, Amazon clarified that it was "an error" in the system and that affected customers does not have to take any further action.

"An error in our system resulted in an order confirmation email being sent to customers who did not purchase a gift card. We are emailing these customers to inform them of the error and apologize for the inconvenience," Amazon spokesperson wrote to CNBC.

During the height of the issue, Amazon's customer service representatives were busy apologizing to the alarmed customers. The representatives also assured that everyone is safe and that all they need to do is to disregard the message.
