The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) released dashboard camera footage from a 2017 incident that featured officers who ignored a robbery and instead played Pokemon Go.
LAPD Officers Attempt to Catch Pokemon
In 2017, two officers namely Louis Lozano and Eric Mitchell decided to skip their on-duty responsibilities to play Pokemon Go. After years of requests, the dashcam footage is now publicly available shedding more light into what transpired during that day.
The new footage released showed that the driver deliberately ignored stop signs, sped in quiet residential areas, and even drove the wrong way on a one-way street. All of these actions were done in pursuit of a Snorlax and Togetic.
In addition, the footage also revealed how the police officers received a call for backup in an active robbery that was happening. The footage showed how the officers were dismayed by the abrupt backup call. The police officers had a combined 28 years of experience on the force were fired right after an investigation.
Pokemon Go's Popularity Among Police
In an edited and shortened video made by 404 Media, the two officers were able to catch Togetic. Mitchell in the background shouted in joy and even mentioned that the guys back at the station were "going to be jealous."
Mitchell and Lozano were afterward questioned by a senior officer after failing to respond in the backup call even if the duo was just near the area of the incident. The two officers lied by claiming that they did not hear the radio which was found to be concerning for their superior.
The full dashcam footage lasted three hours with most of the conversations being about Pokemon Go.
