A new survey from investment bank Piper Sandler unveiled that teenagers in the U.S. are watching more videos on YouTube than on Netflix.
YouTube Soars in Popularity Among Gen Z
According to the survey, teenagers spend about 29.1 percent of their time watching videos on YouTube. Not far enough, these teenagers only spend 28.7 percent on Netflix. The report also unveiled that YouTube became more popular during the spring which helped it rank first while Netflix fell by two percentage points.
"We wonder if this is a push or a pull in regards to the changing consumption habits, as content on YouTube appears to be improving over time and the streaming industry becomes more and more competitive," Piper Sandler analysts shared.
With less than one percent difference, the fight for demand for both Netflix and YouTube is still pretty close. On the contrary, Hulu was ranked third with only a 7 percent rating from the survey. Prime Video and Disney+ had an increased timeshare while teenagers were seen spending less time on cable TV, and HBO Max.
TikTok Continues its Popularity Among Gen Z
While Netflix and YouTube were compared in the same category, as streaming platforms, it is undeniable that TikTok gets most of the attention of teenagers among all the sites and apps. In fact, 38 percent of the polled teenagers said that their favorite social media platform is TikTok.
Meanwhile, Snapchat ranked two with 28.7 percent, followed by Instagram with 29.1 percent.
The Piper Sandler Survey conducts a semi-annual survey on various categories that helps identify the trends within teenagers. The current survey marked its 46th semi-annual survey.
