Minecraft Nears 15th Anniversary

Minecraft is almost on its 15th year anniversary. The game was initially publicized in 2009 and was fully released in November 2011 by Mojang Studios. Since then, the game has entertained various age groups.

"As we approach the 15th anniversary, Minecraft remains one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 300 million copies sold, a milestone no one could have dreamed of when we were all placing our first blocks," head of Mojang Studios Helen Chiang announced during the Minecraft Live 2023 event.

In 2021, Mojang Studios reported that 238 million copies of the game had been sold already, further proving its growth and influence over time. On the other hand, Tetris is still a competitor for the best-selling game title but The Tetris Company is yet to disclose its official numbers to dethrone Minecraft. Grand Theft Auto V came in second with around 185 million sales.

Minecraft Live 2023

On October 15, Mojang Studios held a Minecraft Live event to announce the milestone and the upcoming updates for the game. The 1.21 update will feature a trial spawner which can last up until a limit has been reached. The spawner will dispense loot once the player has defeated the specified number of enemies.

A new hostile mob is also coming in the 1.21 update called The Breeze. Rather than fire, which is normally seen in Blaze, the attacks will use wind projectiles which can create a small explosion with a knockback effect upon impact.

Minecraft fans have so much more to look forward to in the next update as the players can vote on which new creature should be added to the game. This year's choices are a crab, an armadillo, and a penguin. The 1.21 update is expected to drop in mid-2024.
