OpenAI confirmed that the company is forming a team dedicated to bringing ChatGPT to educational applications, as the chatbot continues to become a popular learning tool.
OpenAI Wants to Expand Through Classrooms
During a San Francisco conference, chief operating officer, Brad Lightcap shared that many educators are already seeking ways to incorporate ChatGPT into the curriculum. "We at OpenAI are trying to help them think through the problem and we probably next year will establish a team with the sole intent of doing that," he added.
On the contrary, Lightcap acknowledges that many educators saw ChatGPT as a threat upon its launch last year. He also described that most teachers thought it was the worst thing that could ever happen.
Fortunately, it seems that educators are finally seeing the beneficial use of the chatbot. With that, the company is now confident to integrate AI with learning and education.
"We are engaging with educators across the country to inform them of ChatGPT's capabilities and our ongoing work to improve it," the company wrote in a statement to Reuters.
Powerful Potential of AI in Education
OpenAI has already started some educational partnerships such as with Khan Academy for creating an AI-powered tutor and Schmidt Futures for granting education groups to underprivileged communities.
The company also emphasized that this is an important conversation between the AI and the education sector so that both can discuss the potential benefits and the dangers of misusing AI. Both sectors should also work together to find the perfect way to safely apply AI to classrooms.
With the help of OpenAI students can use the platform as a tutor that can adapt to different learning styles. For teachers, it will serve as an assistant with curriculum writing, boosting creativity, and more.
Regardless, there are still concerns about the privacy of children as countries have different online privacy laws for kids. This is also something that OpenAI must also work for.
