Prime Video's Plans for 'Tomb Raider'

In a Variety report, it was confirmed that McDonnell has officially joined Prime Video's upcoming video game adaptation. After writing Captain Marvel's latest adventure, she is now on her way to give Lara Croft her own journey.

Earlier this year, "Fleabag" actor and showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge, was hired to be the writer and executive producer of the new "Tomb Raider" TV series. There are also reports of Prime Video and MGM collaborating for a cinematic universe for the adaptation.

With a TV series and a movie adaptation in the slate, Prime Video is still yet to give a definite update on the progress of these projects as both are still pretty young in their pre-production stages. It is also a mystery which project will be released first.

McDonnell's List of Experience

Prior to this project, McDonnell had built her reputation writing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her first stint started as a staff writer in "WandaVision," the first series of the franchise that was released on Disney+.

Following the series' success, McDonnell joined forces with Nia DaCosta and Elissa Karasik to write the story of "The Marvels." Her consecutive big and successful projects must have been one of the factors why Prime Video entrusted "Tomb Raider" to her.

The last time fans saw Lara Croft on screen was already five years ago which featured Alicia Vikavaner in the titular role. The movie earned $274 million at the global box office, a moderate success for the film. Although fans must have been waiting for a sequel, the pandemic made it harder to produce another film at that time.
