Samsung Galaxy S5 to feature new user interface and fingerprint scanner

The Samsung Galaxy S5 will get a new design and newly leaked images and information suggest it will also get a brand new user interface and fingerprint scanner built into its display.

In a recent interview, a Samsung executive confirmed that the company would be giving its next generation Galaxy S5 a design that differs from the Galaxy S4. The company also spoke about looking into using iris scanners in place of fingerprint scanners to secure the smartphone. A new report claims that Samsung has opted to use a fingerprint scanner instead of an iris scanner, and newly leaked images give us a glimpse of what is believed to be the Galaxy S5's new user interface.

According to The Korean Herald, sources claim Samsung has chosen to use fingerprint authentication rather than an "unintuitive user experience of iris recognition" in its next flagship smartphone. Samsung is reportedly working on adding fingerprint sensors below the display of the Galaxy S5, allowing users to simply place their finger on the smartphone's display to unlock the device. For the sake of comparison, Apple placed its Touch ID fingerprint reader inside the iPhone 5s' Home button, while the HTC One Max sports its scanner on the rear of the device, below its camera.

A fingerprint scanner won't be the only new feature gracing the Galaxy S5. The always-reliable evleaks has posted images on Twitter of what is reportedly a new version of Samsung's TouchWiz UI that will make its debut on the Galaxy S5. The new UI looks like a complete departure from previous versions of TouchWiz and is centered around a card-based interface.

The UI looks like a mixture of Microsoft's Windows Phone's Metro UI and Google Now's card interface. The cards use contextual information that is very reminiscent of Google Now, and the tiles are arranged in a vertical scrolling fashion that appears to be inspired from Windows Phone's constantly updating Live Tiles. The image shows cards for your current location, home automation, fitness tracking, sports scores, flight information, delivery updates, messages, and more.

It makes sense for Samsung to want to provide users with a fresh new experience, especially with Apple's release of its redesigned iOS 7. Of course we'll have to wait for Samsung to make this official, but this new design has been receiving praise from smartphone fans that have been waiting for the company to deliver a new user experience.
