OpenAI is already among the leading companies in the AI industry, and it plans to create more uses for its AI tool ChatGPT by opening the GPT store. Unfortunately, the release date has been moved to 2024, likely due to the OpenAI ouster drama.
GPT Store's Release Date Has Been Moved
The initial plan was that the GPT Store would be released this December 2023. In a memo sent to users and developers, OpenAI announced that the store will be released early next year due to "a few unexpected things" keeping them busy.
If you don't know what the GPT Store is for, it will serve as a marketplace for developers who create their own GPTs. They can then be paid for their creation depending on how much other OpenAI users use it.
Each custom GPT will be tailored to the needs of the user. The ChatGPT versions will be a better fit for certain tasks, such as being a creative coach who can provide feedback, a tech advisor for troubleshooting devices, and more.
When taking a guess as to what caused the delay, most, if not all, would say that it was due to the five-day drama that led to the ouster and reinstatement of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. A shift in leadership for both the CEO and board members is a big disruption in business, after all.
The memo also states that there will be a couple of improvements that will be implemented in the marketplace, as reported by Tech Crunch. Those announcements could mean that the GPT Store was not ready even without the whole ouster fiasco.
GPT Store's launch was first revealed during OpenAI's Dev Day conference. Even then, it looked like the feature was far from finished. Executives like Sam Altman and Mira Murato were not able to provide coherent answers to many questions.
For instance, the payment and charging methods for developers and paying customers were still unclear. Even if it is ready, it is unlikely to share this kind of business venture while the company is still recovering from the shift and reinstatement of executives.
The best option for OpenAI right now is to let the dust settle first. This might mean that developers could withhold the GPTs they have made to wait for the compensation program that OpenAI plans to offer.
GPT Store Release Date
There's no exact date for the release yet, only that it will be in early 2024. It would be preferable for the store to go public once the company has already worked out all the kinks, whether it's in the marketplace itself or the business.
It won't take that much time to readjust, especially since Sam Altman was already the CEO before, and he was simply reinstated, but that's not to say that there wasn't any damage that needs to be fixed.
Board members are among the most important aspects of the company, especially since they make major decisions like firing the company CEO. With those who voted to oust Altman gone, there are new members who are still settling in.
