DirecTV subscribers experienced a blackout on local NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox outlets after failing to resolve the fee dispute with Tegna.
Tegna Cuts Broadcast to DirecTV
DirecTV customers from dozens of cities have lost their access to several channels. Tegna holds 64 stations in 51 markets and accounts for 40% of DirecTV customers, as per Bloomberg. Sports broadcasts, such as the National Football League's Sunday games, will be affected should the dispute continue.
Meanwhile, DirecTV posted an announcement and shared alternative viewing options using the over-the-air antenna. "Since we do not currently have an active agreement with TEGNA, DIRECTV is legally prohibited from airing its content for the time being," the company wrote.
Affected customers are advised to visit TVPromise.com and enter their ZIP code to check their qualifications. In the meantime, NFL Sunday Games which broadcast CBS Games can be watched on Paramount+ while the NBC games can be watched on Peacock.
Dispute Between Broadcasters and Pay-TV Platforms
Previously, Charter and Disney also went into a dispute which caused a blackout on ABC, ESPN, and FX outlets. The event also happened just in time for the US Open tennis tournament, affecting tennis fans who subscribe to the service. After a week, both companies settled and resolved the issue.
"We share your frustration and hope to bring back your missing channels as soon as possible," DirecTV announced. However, Tegna revealed that DirecTV had "refused to reach a fair, market-based agreement.
The dispute between broadcasters and pay TV platforms is becoming common as broadcasters seek higher fees from cable and satellite providers, especially for providing essential programs like local news and weather. Meanwhile, pay TV providers cited annual increases exceeding inflation.
