Google Contacts Will Soon Launch Custom Ringtones Manager for Android

Setting your custom ringtones is a good way to personalize your phone and differentiate messages from calls. Now Google might probably make the feature more accessible and easier.

Google was reported to be prepping its Google Contacts app for Android to add a new "Ringtones" section to easily customize sound alert for each notification by just tapping "Add contact ringtone."

The version 4.22.37.586680692 will include the new feature. The version is still a work in progress and no actual date yet is given for its release.

The added feature was first spotted by user AssembleDebug on X (formerly Twitter) on Dec. 1, Friday.

Google's changes on its contacts app came in time as the tech giant is rehauling its RCS to compete with Apple's iMessage app.

How to Set Custom Ringtone on Current Google Contacts

Before the update comes out, Google Contacts users only have one way to change ringtones according to their preferences.

To do so, users can access the Contacts tab on their Google Phone app or directly into the Google Contacts app. Next, tap the menu in the top right corner for each contact person.

Choose the "Set ringtone" option, then tap on "My sounds." A plus sign will soon appear at the bottom right corner. Click that and navigate through for the sound clip of your preference.

Just a quick note, the sound clip must be downloaded into your app before being used as a custom ringtone.

Once done, simply press the "Save" action button in the top right corner. The selected sound will be the contact person's ringtone when they call or message you. Then, rinse and repeat for others.

Google Battle on Cross Platform Messaging

Google's decision to revamp the app did not come as a surprise as it aims to spread the Android messaging standard to competitors.

Earlier in November, Google urged EU regulators to allow Apple's iMessage app to become compatible with other OS's RCS.

Apple soon folded to the European group and allowed the more feature-rich texting standard on iPhone and will work alongside the original iMessage app.
