Disney Plus Will Release a ‘Black Panther’ Series Showing More of Wakandan History

Marvel continues to expand its content list long after the events of "Avengers: Endgame" with both movies and TV shows. Along with other content on Disney+, Marvel will be releasing a show that follows the life of Wakandan warriors.

'Black Panther' Spinoff

Disney already announced the show a few years ago, but it wasn't until now that we got more significant details from the entertainment giant during a press event. For one, we already have the title for the upcoming spinoff, which will be called "The Eyes of Wakanda."

Instead of just focusing on the champion of the hidden high-tech country, the show will follow several warriors on a quest to retrieve dangerous vibranium artifacts from all around the world at different points in the country's history, as reported by The Verge.

This is the third "Black Panther" title we'll be getting after "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," wherein the titular character was filled in by Shuri, T'Challa's sister. Given that Marvel tends to make all its recent content canon, we might see a few references here and there.

Even though the show is animated, this won't be the first time that the studio connects them to live-action titles. After all that has happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe lately, we should expect a few changes from when we last heard from Wakanda.

Marvel Could Use the Win

Even though Marvel has been doing well enough in recent months, it's evident that it has seen its share of movie and show flops. We're not talking about "Loki" season two, of course, since the show has been a hit ever since it was released.

The studio's recent release, "The Marvels," didn't exactly reach the numbers the company had hoped. In its opening weekend, the movie only earned $47 million, which is bad for a Marvel production. In fact, the expected earning for the movie was around $75 million or more.

Some argued that the movie was actually good and that others just did not appreciate that the cast was women-centric. However, Disney CEO Bog Iger believed that the disappointing figures were due to the lack of supervision on set during the pandemic, as per Forbes.

The chief executive also pointed out that due to the past success of the titles from Marvel, the studio is already held to an "unbelievably high standard," to the point that when a film did not reach a global box office of over a billion dollars, the company is disappointed.

What's worse is that "The Marvels" was not the biggest flop in terms of recent releases for Disney. "Haunted Mansion," which was released back in late July, lost more than $102 million at the box office, probably due to the other titles that were released such as "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer."

It only made $33.3 million at the global box office, according to Fandomwire, which is more than $10 million less than "The Marvels." It might also have something to do with the canceled promotional events due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes at the time.
