Proton Mail for Desktop

Proton Mail launched its services in 2014 as an alternative to Google Workspace apps. For nearly a decade, the company has been providing secure and private email services to its customers but it was only accessible through browsers.

According to CEO Andy Yen, desktop apps provide certain advantages like offline support, hence, the company decided to launch its desktop app. The app promises a modern and sleek design that offers a clutter-free experience.

The desktop app will give users a full Proton Mail and Proton Calendar experience. The current beta version of the app does not support all the features that are available on the web app yet. Regardless, the company promised to include them gradually and to add new features as well.

Proton Mail Desktop App Release

As of writing, the beta is restricted to anyone with the Visionary plan. The company put a limitation on access as the company aims to rely on the feedback to improve the desktop app before releasing it widely.

Features such as offline mode support, switching accounts, notification badges, and other functions, are expected to be added soon on the desktop app. Currently, the desktop app is only available for macOS and Windows users.

For 2024, the company is targeting to expand access to the beta to all Proton Mail users. In addition, the Linux version of the app is expected to arrive as well in early 2024.
