Meta is adding its generative AI editing tool for users to automatically change their photos' background as the tech giant fully commits to the AI trend.
The company's head of generative AI, Ahmad Al-Dahle, posted on Wednesday that the new feature will enable US users "to reimagine your image's background with just a few taps and a prompt."
Edited images done via Instagram will include a unique "Try it" sticker when posted to Instagram Story for other users to get a head-on.
The feature's launching came soon after Snapchat, a common competitor of Instagram, launched its own AI tool for creating and sending custom AI-generated images.
How to Use Instagram AI Background Editing Tool
To access Instagram's new editing feature, simply access its Story editing screen.
Take a picture or upload an image to start the editing. The new tool can be seen above, right next to the text button (Aa icon).
Enabling the feature will allow the app to automatically remove background details from the image. The background removal works really well to recognize the subject thanks to Meta's AI.
Tapping the button will also pull up a text box for users to type what replacement background they want to do.
A little fine-tuning in the prompts may be needed to get the desired background. After that, the edited picture is now ready to be posted and shared with followers.
It remains uncertain when will these features will be available for users outside the US.
Meta Expands AI Tools on Facebook, Instagram
The background editor is only Meta's recent addition to its growing AI tools in its platforms.
Just this month, the social media giant launched its 28 AI-powered characters for WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram for users to chat with.
The company also improved several of its existing AI features on Facebook, including a "seamless" translator chatbot that can respond to user's voice immediately.
Meta's new features were recently released during the company's 10-year anniversary of launching its AI research division.
