The Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) announced its upcoming digital library version, offering remote access to its massive collection of gaming-related archives.
VGHF Resources for Academics, Gaming Enthusiasts
In 2017, the VGHF was established in Oakland, California, offering various collections that are related to gaming, magazines, art books, and even source codes. The non-profit organization has been eyeing to digitize its massive collection to serve other enthusiasts around the globe.
"For the past two years, we've been building a digital platform where you can explore our archives, without having to visit in person," the organization announced.
In an 18-minute video, the library director Phil Salvador gave a first glimpse of the VGHF digital library. However, he reminded that while the demo has already some functions, it is only a small part of the project.
Currently, the digital library is still a work in progress. Salvador also revealed that the project is ready to soft-launch next year with lots of exciting collections to watch out for.
VGHF Targets to Digitize Whole Collection, Preserve Gaming Legacy
The end goal of the organization is to successfully digitize the entire archive. However, it will take some years before the whole collection gets done. The two-year development of the library was spent mostly on designing the search technology and interface.
The project of VGHF is a crucial move for preserving the legacy of gaming. Aside from written documents, there are also arts, designs, and audio assets that are included in the collection.
The VGHF is also involved in restoring media materials for big gaming companies such as Capcom, SNK, Bethesda, and more. The non-profit organization stands tall with its advocacy to preserve the gaming industry.
