Mickey Mouse as Public Domain

Once the Mickey Mouse became a public domain, many artists and creators will be able to use the character design. Regardless, a Disney spokesperson clarified that expiration will not affect the modern versions of Mickey.

"Ever since Mickey Mouse's first appearance in the 1928 short film 'Steamboat Willie', people have associated the character with Disney's stories, experiences, and authentic products," he added.

Mickey will continue as the global ambassador for the Walt Disney Company spanning from their films, theme park attractions, and merchandise. The company also assured that it will continue to protect the rights to the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that are under copyright.

Disney Continues to Hold Mickey Trademark

Despite the upcoming expiration of the copyright, Disney still owns the trademark on Mickey as a "corporate mascot and brand identifier." Creators will also be prevented from creating deceptive products that will pose as affiliated to Disney.

U.S. law states that copyright can be held for a maximum of 95 years. Mickey Mouse made his debut in Steamboat Willie in 1928. Disney and other big companies have been campaigning to keep their IP out of the public domain.

Other characters such as Winnie the Pooh's Tigger will also become a public domain next year. The character first made an appearance in the 1928 "The House in Pooh Corner."
