Samsung has just launched two new Galaxy S4 variants. The Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 mini will be available in 'Black Editions', which feature matte black design and faux-leather backs.
The company has a solid reputation of taking one device and creating spinoffs based on the smartphone's name and design. We watched Samsung launch three Galaxy S4 variants in the summer - the Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy S4 Zoom, and Galaxy S4 mini. Samsung isn't done, however, as it has just announced that the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 mini will also be offered in what the company is calling 'Black Edition'.
As previously mentioned, that essentially means a matte black body and the Galaxy Note 3's more premium feeling faux-leather back. There are no changes in either of the smartphone's specs or software.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition features a 5-inch, 1920 x 1080 full HD Super AMOLED display with a high pixel density of 441 pixels per inch (ppi). It ships with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and Samsung's TouchWiz UI on top. The smartphone is powered by a 1.9GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor and 2GB of RAM to provide a fast and fluid user experience.
The Galaxy S4 ships with 16GB of internal storage and a microSD expansion slot with support for up to 64GB microSD cards. The smartphone's high-end 13-megapixel rear camera has auto flash, zero shutter lag and is able to record Full HD 1080p video at 30fps, and there is also a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. The Galaxy S4's wireless connectivity options consist of 4G LTE radio, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n//ac, Bluetooth 4.0, and GPS. The Galaxy S4 also sports an IR blaster that turns the device into a universal remote control with a dedicated program guide. The handset ships with a large 2,600 mAh removable battery.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition has the same specs as the standard model as well. It features a 4.3-inch 540 x 960 Super AMOLED display with a pixel density of 256 pixels per inch (ppi) and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The smartphone is powered by a 1.7GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and 1.5GB of RAM.
It also includes 16GB of internal storage and a microSD expansion slot that supports up to 64GB microSD cards. The S4 Mini ships with an 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, and 1080p HD video recording capabilities, as well as a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera. Its wireless connectivity options include a 4G LTE radio, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and NFC. Samsung has included a removable 1,900 mAh battery.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 and S4 mini Black Edition smartphones will go on sale in February in Russia. The company has yet to announce what other markets will get to see the new Black Editions, but we'll keep you posted as soon as we learn more.
