Nintendo's Earthbound Turns 30

Earthbound, also known as Mother 2 in Japan, had its initial release in 1994 and was later released in North America in 1995. The game owed its popularity to its quirky and distinctive gameplay.

The game follows Ness, a young boy, who sets on a journey to save the world from an alien invasion of Giygas. Fans of the game applauded it for portraying a perfect blend of the modern-day setting and some real-world locations with a fantasy twist.

In a post by Nintendo, it was confirmed that the company is preparing for a celebration. The company mentioned new Earthbound merchandise and a special event that has never been done before. Moreover, there are also hints of brand collaborations for the event.

Nintendo's Earthbound Popularity

Although the game is going 30 years old, Nintendo is far from letting the game rest. About two years ago, Earthbound and its prequel had a surprise launch on Switch.

The game is still available through Nintendo Switch Online, wherein the membership starts at $19.99 per year. Unfortunately, the game cannot be bought individually. However, Nintendo has been offering various classic games for its subscription service.

As of writing, Nintendo has yet to reveal the in-depth details of the celebration. Most importantly, if there will be any celebration outside Japan at all.
