Samsung schedules "Unpacked 5" event for Feb. 24 - Ready to meet the Galaxy S5?

Samsung has scheduled an Unpacked 5 Event for Feb. 24 in Barcelona. The company is expected to unveil its next-generation Galaxy S5 to the world.

We know the Samsung Galaxy S5 will go on sale by April, thanks to a recent interview with a company executive. There was a recent report that claimed Samsung was planning to unveil the Galaxy S5 at an event on Feb. 23, just before the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014 kicks off. Samsung has practically confirmed the rumors by announcing it will be holding an "Unpacked 5" event on Feb. 24 in Barcelona.

The Mobile World Congress usually brings with it some very impressive mobile device announcements. Last year's show saw the announcement of the HTC One and it's now safe to assume the Samsung Galaxy S5 will dominate MWC 2014. Samsung hasn't actually confirmed that its Unpacked 5 event will be used for the Galaxy S5, but considering we're coming up to almost a year since the company launched the Galaxy S4 and recent reports claim the new flagship smartphone would be announced on Feb. 23, we can hazard a guess on what the company will show off.

The Unpacked 5 event will also likely be the launch venue for the Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch. A company executive recently revealed that the second-generation smartwatch would launch alongside the Galaxy S5. The device is expected to be slimmer and sleeker than the current Galaxy Gear and also have improved battery life. The design and battery life are two of the original Galaxy Gear's biggest criticisms, and it'll be interesting to see how Samsung address these issues.

When it comes to the Galaxy S5, recent reports have claimed that the smartphone would launch in a similar fashion to Apple's latest iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. There would be a high-end/premium model that would be made out of metal, while a less expensive plastic variant would also be offered. One model would ship with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM, while the more powerful variant is said to pack in an octa-core Samsung Exynos processor and 3GB of RAM. The Galaxy S5 is expected to have a 5.2-inch display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440, a 16-megapixel-rear camera and a fingerprint scanner. Some reports have also claimed that both variants would be made of plastic.

We'll bring you all the news from Samsung's Unpacked 5 event on Feb. 24, so stay tuned for more information as soon as it becomes available.
