The PlayStation exclusive Until Dawn might receive a full live-movie adaptation soon as part of major game publishers bringing their popular titles to the big screen.

The Until Dawn movies will reportedly be handled by the creators of "Annabelle: Creation," director David F. Sandberg and writer Gary Dauberman.

Dauberman has worked on various horror-thriller titles in the past year, mostly from "The Conjuring" franchise, but also made contributions to Stephen King's "It" and "The Swamp Thing."

Dauberman is also working on another King's book, "Salem's Lot," and a live-adaptation reboot for the 1980s animated classic "Gargoyles" for Disney+.

Meanwhile, Sandberg has directed the two "Shazam" movies, both the well-regarded 2017 hit and the recently released 2023 sequel that closed the DC Extended Universe at a flop.

The main question, however, is whether the original casts of the game will be featured in the movie adaptation.

Until Dawn uses the likeness of real-life actors for its characters. Among those cast were Academy Awards Best Actor Rami Malek, "Scream" legend Hayden Panettiere, and Peter Stomare.

As of writing, no final list of cast or synopsis was announced yet. The film is confirmed to be R-rated and will be adapted by horror movie studio Screen Gems, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

More PlayStation Live-Adaptations Expected in the Future

Following the success of "The Last of Us" live-adaptation series, Sony has been ramping up the announcements of its PlayStation exclusives being made for cinemas and streaming services.

The game publisher has already put out live-adaptations for Uncharted, Twisted Metal, and Gran Turismo over the span of just a couple years.

Big titles like the God of War, Horizon, Days Gone, and Ghost of Tsushima have also been confirmed to receive screen adaptations in the coming years.

Sony's increased presence in the film and series productions follows as more publishers are cashing in on animated- or live adaptations of their most popular games.

Game Publishers Cash In on Game-to-Screen Adaptation Hype

The trend of video games having a film or series adaptation was revived after years of neglect following the success of the two "Sonic" movies in 2020 and 2022.

Since then, major studios, many from Japan, have announced that they are licensing their biggest titles to Western studios for a full adaptation, franchise, and all.

Just last year, Illumination Studio's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" earned a total of $1.36 billion to become the highest-grossing film based on a video game.

Nintendo soon announced that it is also adapting the Legend of Zelda franchise to the silver screen.

Sonic creator SEGA Games also confirmed film adaptations for the Persona, Yakuza, and Crazy Taxi.
