In less than a week Samsung will unveil its highly-anticipated Galaxy S5. Bloomberg is reporting it could be cheaper than the Galaxy S4 when it hits stores, and gives more details.
The Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014 is the place for all of our favorite consumer electronics giants to show off their latest work and tempt us with their offerings. This year's show kicks off on Feb. 24 and runs through Feb. 27 in Barcelona and we already know what companies like Samsung, HTC, and Nokia will be unveiling.
Samsung will likely be the star of the show and will kick things off with its Unpacked 5 event that it is holding at MWC on Feb. 24. The event and news from it could potentially overshadow the products other companies are planning to announce, which is most likely the reason Samsung decided to break from tradition and announce its next-generation Galaxy S5 at the show. Samsung will get even more coverage by unveiling the Galaxy S5 at MWC instead of doing an announcement on its own at a separate event, and with Samsung's recent announcement that it plans on spending more money promoting tablets in 2014, this certainly makes sense.
Bloomberg is reporting some juicy news about Samsung's plans for the Galaxy S5. The site claims that Samsung is considering selling the Galaxy S5 for less than previous models in the series, after encouragement from at least one wireless carrier. The basic idea is that the Galaxy S5 should be priced more aggressively to ensure greater success when customers are choosing between the iPhone 5s and Galaxy S5. Samsung saw lower than expected sales of the Galaxy S4 and executives recently confirmed the fact in an interview and blamed it on the Galaxy S4's design being too similar to the Galaxy S3. The company has already revealed that the Galaxy S5 would feature a new design to address this issue.
If Samsung does introduce the Galaxy S5 at a lower price, this is how it could possibly play out. Current rumors claim Samsung will introduce two versions of the Galaxy S5 - a more premium and high-end Galaxy S5 "Prime" with a 5.2-inch WQHD 2560 x 1440 resolution display, and a less expensive Galaxy S5 "Standard" with lower specs and a 5.2-inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD display.
Recent rumors have also claimed that Samsung has decided to follow Apple's lead and place a fingerprint scanner inside of the Galaxy S5's Home button and also adopt a new user interface with iOS 7-like flat icons.
We'll need to wait until Feb. 24 to hear the official details for the Galaxy S5 and see if any of these reports actually hold true, but these news are definitely intriguing. Stay tuned.
