Nintendo Attributes Super Mario Wonder's Success to Multiplayer Mode

Nintendo credited Super Mario Bros. Wonder's success to its multiplayer mode, proving how popular the game has become due to its accessibility to play with friends.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa detailed the factors behind the success of the latest Super Mario game during the recent earnings report.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder Success

Last year, Nintendo released Super Mario Bros. Wonder and the game quickly gained popularity after receiving positive feedback from gamers. As for Furukawa, he believed that the multiplayer feature of the game was the most significant behind its success, citing that around half of the players are using multiplayer.

According to him the gameplay "suited the need for a game many people can enjoy with family and friends." In addition, the game was also released before the holiday season making it the perfect gift for friends and relatives.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder has two types of multiplayer. This means that players can play locally using the console or gather their virtual friends through an online server.

Local gaming allows up to four players to play on one Nintendo Switch and play the game's levels. Meanwhile, the online multiplayer mode allows up to 12 players to gather in a private lobby and divide into groups of four to play through the levels.

Nintendo Praises Super Mario Franchise

For the longest time, Nintendo is well-known for its Super Mario franchise. Prior to the release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" hit the theaters and became the highest-grossing video game movie.

According to Furukawa, the movie's blockbuster success in theaters and streaming platforms has contributed as well to the game's popularity.

"So even though the theatrical release is over, the number of people who have seen the movie for the first time continues to increase, and we believe this has also helped drive the good sales of Super Mario Bros. Wonder," he explained.
