Google to Cancel Gpay App, P2P Payments Starting June

Google announced that the Google Pay (GPay) app is bidding goodbye in the U.S. starting this June 4. However, the app will remain functional in India and Singapore.

Google Cancels GPay for U.S. Customers

According to Google, millions of people have been using GPay to secure digital payments in over 180 countries. However, the U.S. version will cease to exist starting June 4, as per Google's announcement.

Users of the app are encouraged to view and transfer their GPay balance to their respective bank accounts. After June 4, the app will continue to allow viewing and transferring of funds from the Google Pay website. However, peer-to-peer payments will officially be suspended upon the deadline.

"You can continue to access the most popular features - tapping to pay in stores and managing payment methods - right from Google Wallet, which is used five times more than the Google Pay app in the U.S.," Google advised.

Google Pushes Google Wallet for Digital Payments

In 2022, Google launched Google Wallet intending to replace the GPay app in the long run. During its introduction, the company advertised it as a "secure digital credential store" that can store user's mobile driver's licenses and state IDs.

As GPay bids goodbye to its users, Google is now directing people to the Search tab for finding deals and fresh offers. However, there will be no cashback experiences unlike before.

According to the company, Google Wallet is the best alternative service for GPay. The company also revealed that the app is used five times more than the GPay app in the U.S.

"We've invested in making payments as fast and seamless as possible - like improving Google Pay autofill in Chrome, making it easy to pay for public transit, and expanding the types of passes you can store in Wallet," the company announced.
