The Nintendo Switch Online App has started to stop its support for older versions of iOS and Android, as first spotted by My Nintendo News.
The mobile app was launched as a communication tool for players while gaming outside the Switch console.
Nintendo Switch Online App Update Shuts Down Support
As reported by My Nintendo News, the Nintendo Switch Online app version 2.9.0 will only support Apple devices that are in iOS 15.0 or later. This includes iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices.
Meanwhile, Android devices must be working under Android OS 8.0 or later. While it could be disappointing for some users, the iOS 15 has already been available since 2021, while Android OS 8 debuted in 2017. The devices were old enough to get phased out.
The latest update also noted that "other minor changes have been implemented." However, the app page did not provide detailed information about these changes.
Nintendo Switch App Remains Under Mixed Reviews
Unlike other consoles, Nintendo's in-game communication experience is a bit odd for some players. Some consoles can chat with their friends directly through text or voice chat on their consoles.
Meanwhile, some gamers opt for third-party apps like Discord for in-game communication, since it's supported by the console. However, Switch gamers are forced to download the mobile app to communicate with friends while playing games.
The app is intended to guide and extend the gamers' experience, especially during multiplayer games. This includes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Overcooked, Splatoon 3, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and more.
As of writing, the app is still receiving mixed reviews from both the App Store and the Google Play Store, hinting that some players are still uncomfortable with Nintendo's requirements.
