Meta pointed to a "technical issue" that restricted their access to their servers as the cause for Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and other Meta platforms to suddenly go down on Tuesday morning.
Meta communications director Andy Stone posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the company had "resolved the issue as quickly as possible" nearly two hours after the outage.
Over 500,000 users have been reported to be suddenly logged out of their Facebook and Instagram accounts around 9 a.m. ET, according to website outage tracker Downdetector.
As of writing, only more than 2,500 reports were recorded.
Meta Outage at Super Tuesday
The outage broke out in time for the Super Tuesday primary election where millions of Americans are expected to attend to declare their votes ahead of the election polls in November.
Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram are among the primary sources of information for many voters on what is happening during the primary, as well as the main online platform for candidates to promote their campaigns.
Meta has yet to confirm speculations that a cyberattack might have caused the outage.
Meta Users Flock to X, TikTok
During the outage, many users from Meta moved to TikTok and X to get more information about the outage and, of course, joke about the social media and its CEO.
X and its owner Elon Musk also took the chance to take a jab at the platform, saying "We know why you're all here rn."
Meta is among X's stiff competitors with Musk and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg even taunting each other to a "cage match" last year. The fight never came to fruition.
It is worth noting that X also suffered repeated outages and inaccessible features in the past due to "technical issues."
