A brand new Samsung Galaxy S3 Slim smartphone has made a quiet launch in Brazil, sporting a quad-core processor but otherwise low-end specifications.
Samsung has made no official announcements in this regards, but it appears that smartphone shoppers in Brazil are the first ones to gain access to the new affordable Galaxy S3 spinoff. The Samsung Galaxy S3 Slim is a low-end handset with mostly standard internals, as the quad-core processing power under the hood is the only thing that has more traction.
It's also worth highlighting that despite its name, the Galaxy S3 Slim is not a slimmer version of the original Samsung Galaxy S3. On the contrary, the original 2012 flagship was 8.6 mm thin, whereas this new model measures 9.7mm. The watered-down specs, meanwhile, include a 4.5-inch display with a meager resolution of just 960 x 540 pixels, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage capacity and a microSD card slot for up to 32GB of additional memory. The Galaxy S3 Slim further comes with a 5-megapixel rear camera and a VGA front shooter. On the software side, the new variant runs the older Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system, while the original Galaxy S3 has received an update (albeit buggy) to the newer Android 4.3.
The new Samsung Galaxy S3 Slim is already available from Samsung's official store in Brazil, and it comes in black and white color options. So far Brazil seems to be the only country to offer this new model, but the Galaxy S3 Slim is expected to make its debut in other markets as well, especially emerging ones.
The original Samsung Galaxy S3 has enjoyed great success worldwide, and it's still considered a powerful smartphone despite its age. Launched as the company's 2012 flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S3 still packs a punch. In several markets, however, the original model is still seen as quite expensive, which might explain Samsung's move to offer a cheaper spinoff with lower-end specifications. Samsung has never been too shy about flooding the market with a slew of devices for all tastes and budgets, and the latest Samsung Galaxy S3 Slim launch comes as further proof.
