Faithful videogame adaptation series are hard to come by. Despite the more rollouts of videogame adaptations for TV and streaming, only a few captured the true essence of the game they were based on.
A great example would be the later seasons of "Halo" and "The Witcher," in which both series have deviated from the original plot that it has become an entirely new story on their own. And not the good one.
So, here are some series available on streaming sites that faithfully adapted events of the game's story or were integrated into its world-building.
For the same reason, shows like "Castlevania" and "Arcane" that were more loosely based on the original content or made in a "separate timeline" will not be included in the list.
The Last of Us
There is no word to describe Max's "The Last of Us" other than immaculate. The series was able to translate all the emotional and gripping scenes in the original game into the live adaptation.
Although some parts were added in earlier episodes, these additions were minimal and only served to further build up the post-apocalyptic world the original game is set in.
A second season for the series is already underway and is set to adapt the whole "The Last of Us II" story.
Whether it will appeal to fans or not, however, remains a question, especially how the second game sparked debates in the community when it was first released.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
Unlike other videogame adaptations on the list, "Cyberpunk: Edgrunners" expanded the world of Cyberpunk 2077 rather than just adapt the game's main storyline.
Set a few years back before the events in 2077, the series gave life to the inhabitants of Night City and bring more impact to the actions players will do in the main game.
Brutal but melodramatic, the series catches the dystopian capitalist world the original Cyberpunk story tries to portray.
The recent update in the game, along with several essential bug fixes, added references to the beloved series. Among these are new weapons and upgrade paths shown in the Netflix show.
Dragon's Dogma
If there was one thing to criticize about Netflix's "Dragon's Dogma" adaptation is that it is too faithful to the source material. Too faithful that it limited the series to breaching the game's community.
Stuck too close to the game's main narrative, the series was not able to expand into the world of Gransys as it does with the original open-world RPG franchise.
Add to the fact that the series was released during the time when Netflix was still finding its own footing in 3D animation, resulting in a show hindered by its visuals to appeal to outside viewers.
Elsewise, the story showcases the strength of the original Dragon's Dogma players have loved throughout the years. Longtime fans are also sure to love the easter eggs and references sprinkled throughout each episode.
Steins;Gate
Based on a visual novel in 2009, this 2011 anime adaptation features both the good and bad endings of the game.
There are numerous visual novel anime adaptations but only a few came equal to or surpassed "Steins;Gate" did over a decade ago.
The story being primarily dialogue also helped the anime adaptation elevate some scenes to appeal to a wider range of audience.
NieR: Automata Ver1.1a
For a game with multiple endings and secret storylines, "NieR: Automata Ver1.1a" was able to successfully adapt the game into a stunning made-for-TV series.
The first season of the story only focused on one of the main storylines in the series, making it more cohesive and accessible even to those who have not played the original game.
It is uncertain if the studio animating the series will adapt all story routes, although a second season is already confirmed and set to release sometime this year.
