Amazon Rolls Out Same-Day Prescription Delivery for New York, Los Angeles

Amazon Pharmacy launched its AI-powered same-day delivery option for New York City and Los Angeles customers.

The same-day delivery option is now available for customers in Austin, Indianapolis, Miami, Phoenix, and Seattle while drone deliveries can be done within an hour for customers in College Station, Texas.

Amazon Pharmacy Improves Delivery Options for Customers

Amazon started its online pharmacy in 2020, two years after its successful acquisition of PillPack. Since then, customers have been allowed to get their prescribed medications through home delivery with free shipping for Prime members.

This year Amazon Pharmacy has shown improvements to its delivery services by providing faster access to medications through same-day delivery.

"By bringing Amazon Pharmacy's deliveries into our existing world-class logistics network, Amazon is building the fastest and most convenient service for the home delivery of prescription medications," said Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores.

Amazon Pharmacy's Operations

Amazon Pharmacy customers can get their medication for flu, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other common conditions using its new small-format facilities. According to Amazon, the Brooklyn facility has over 12,000 medications available on the site to support urgent care.

The company also explained that the same-day delivery option will be different depending on the city. For instance, Manhattan delivery workers would be riding eco-friendly e-bikes while drones would be utilized in College Station, Texas.

The greater Los Angeles and other suburban areas will have Rivian all-electric vans and other commercial vehicles to deliver the medications to the customer's doorstep.

Amazon also boasted about the operation's reliance on AI and machine learning which help pharmacists fill prescriptions in a faster yet more accurate manner. The company also assured that no prescription can leave the center without being verified by a pharmacist.
