YouTube Shorts is undeniably infested with bot accounts. From content generation to views, more and more AI-fueled content is being fronted to users, all meant to serve one purpose: to earn profit fast.
With the technology becoming more accessible to many people, so does the growing trend of organized content generation campaigns on the platform solely to drive profits.
AI Motivational Posts
The current trend or "meta" on the YouTube Shorts' AI mill are motivational posts, often using historical figures to spout supposed inspiring quotes.
These videos are even easy to spot. A new account will easily encounter one or two similar videos on their Shorts feed just minutes after creating the account.
Like with Facebook's AI epidemic, Jesus Christ and other Biblical figures are common subjects of these videos to drive thousands, if not millions, of views in an instant.
Looking at many of these accounts interacting with the posts will show automated responses from bot accounts, usually giving unrelated answers to the post or attaching scam links in the replies.
These videos are easy to make, with the image, voice, and even the quote of Christ being generated by AI, allowing similar content to roll out as soon as one came out. Of course, all of them are monetized.
With the influx of AI-powered videos on the platform, it makes it more difficult for content creators to build a career on the TikTok-like avenue of the platform.
However, these motivational/religious posts more often than not diverge into far more nefarious content just to gain more clicks.
Disinformation Machine
With the surge of AI-fueled religious Shorts on the platform, a number of "doom posting" accounts are starting to emerge.
Often predicting supposed the "end of the world," the videos use AI to depict alleged signs of the apocalypse in addition to AI-voiced narrations.
The videos commonly associate current events to amplify fear among people, especially those unfamiliar with AI, and could easily be convinced by the graphic images.
Exploiting the YouTube Shorts Algorithm
Although YouTube has started curbing the number of AI-powered posts on its platform by enforcing new content label requirements, more just keep popping up from each one that got taken down.
It did not help that the Shorts' algorithm is being easily exploited to push for these kinds of videos to appear foremost on many accounts, further boosting its visibility and engagement.
For now, more content creators are demanding that the social media giant address the issue amid the platform's attitude towards disinformation, especially with the upcoming elections.
