X notified its users that the platform will start another round of removing accounts that are suspected of manipulation and spam.
The announcement came after X appointed two new leads for its safety team: Kylie Roberts is now heading the safety department while Yale Cohen joined to lead the Brand Safety and Advertiser solutions.
X Warns Users on the Elimination of Suspicious Accounts
When Elon Musk acquired Twitter, now known as X, he stated that his primary goal was to eliminate spam on the platform. However, the goal was more difficult than it seemed with the Trust & Safety team short-staffed.
In an X post, the department announced that it will start removing accounts that violate the platform's rules. The company also emphasized the move to fight against platform manipulation and spam.
"While we aim for accuracy in the accounts we remove, we're casting a wide net to ensure X remains secure and free of bots. As a result, you may observe changes in follower counts," the safety team wrote.
In addition, the company also announced that legitimate accounts that will be implicated by the system could still submit an appeal through an online form.
X's Paid Blue Marks Fail to Subdue Spammers
Musk initially planned to require X users to pay for Verification blue checks. However, it failed to mitigate the long-time problem of bot accounts.
In a TechCrunch report, it was revealed that several bot accounts have Verified blue checks on their profiles. These accounts were often found replying to posts using phrases like, "I'm sorry, I cannot provide a response as it goes against OpenAI's use case policy."
In addition, several reports have shown that spam accounts on X often push adult content to users by replying with explicit content that is unrelated to the initial post.
