Walmart shoppers in the US may be able to receive up to $500 from the retail company following its $45 million class-action settlement over supposed "falsely-inflated" products.
Customers who have purchased certain "weighted goods" like meat, seafood, and several organic fruits between Oct. 19, 2018, to Jan. 19, 2024, may be eligible for financial compensation, according to its settlement page.
The settlement stems from a 2022 lawsuit alleging Walmart of advertising false weights of sold-by-weight products to artificially inflate prices.
Walmart continues to deny "these allegations and denies that it did anything wrong," but told CNN that it believes "a settlement is in the best interest of both parties."
The US Middle District of Florida has yet to approve the settlement proposal.
Who are Eligible Walmart Settlement Money?
While Walmart intends to pay affected shoppers up to $500, settlement money received will vary depending on the items purchased and the mode of transaction used.
Shoppers who purchased weighted goods but are unable to provide receipts can get between $10 to $25 depending on the number of products purchased during the eligibility period.
Customers who are able to provide full receipts and other proof of purchase, on the other hand, can receive the complete $500 settlement.
Shoppers can try to retrieve their receipts via Walmart's "Receipt Lookup" page.
Individuals who purchased weighted goods through online or resale platforms will not be eligible for the settlement.
How to Submit Claim for Walmart Settlement Money?
Affected customers may file for their claim up until June 5, 2024. Meanwhile, shoppers intending to opt-out or object to the settlement money only have until May 22 to submit their decision.
It is worth noting that accepting the settlement payment will relieve the position to further sue Walmart "related to the legal claims resolved by this Settlement."
Shoppers can also "do nothing" and relieve their position to claim the money and continue litigation against the company.
