SD cards for phones, tablets, and cameras may soon be able to hold more files as the promise of 4TB storage capacity could possibly become reality as early as 2025.
Hardware storage firm Western Digital showcased its newest memory card that can "deliver an insane amount of capacity in the same-sized SD form factor" at the 2024 National Association of Broadcasters show.
Attendees reportedly were given an early preview of the 4TB SanDisk Extreme PRO SDUC chip's "full capacity" for laptops and cameras.
What to Expect of 4TB Memory SD Cards?
As of writing, no release date or price range for the 4TB SD card has been announced yet. However, it is expected to be sold at least quite higher than the $100 price range for 2TB SD cards.
The SD card will also use the same Secure Digital Ultra Capacity feature companies have used for hard drives that can hold up to 128 terabytes of storage since 2018.
According to hardware reviewer AnandTech, the SD card offers enough recording power to capture videos and pictures in 8K.
SanDisk Teases 192TB Hard Drive Cards for PC
While cameras and phones are finally moving steadily with terabytes worth of storage capacity, desktops and laptops will also receive better options for their memory cards.
In the same NAB 2024 showcase announcement, Western Digital intends to roll out 192TB hard drives "to better support demanding 4K, 8K, and VR workflows."
With a starting price of $7,499.99, the G-RAID SHUTTLE 8 hard drive will supposedly have transfer rates of up to 1690MB/s read and of 1490MB/s write.
Transfer rates refer to how fast a certain amount of data can travel for each process. With the SanDisk hard drive, it can transfer gigabytes worth of data in just seconds.
This processing power can be beneficial for those working on memory-consuming applications, like graphics editing, AI development, and other massive data processes.
