Mercedes-Benz Transitions G-Class to EV

The German automaker first introduced its EQG or electric vehicle (EV) concept in 2021. The company is finally at its production stage three years after its announcement.

The electric G-Class boasts four independent electric motors that can power a combined 579hp and 879 lb-ft of torque. Each motor is built with a 2-speed transmission which allows access to a low-gear, suitable for off-roading.

The gas-powered models typically start to cost around $143,000 but the electric-powered G-Wagen starts at around $152,000 up to over $205,000. The Edition One trim will be exclusively available to the U.S. market and is expected to arrive in the second half of the year.

Mercedes Electric G-Class Inspired From Ladder-Frame

In a press release, Mercedes shared that the models are based on a ladder-frame concept which boasts an independent front suspension and rigid axle at the rear. The EV is also covered with a torsion-resistant casing to prevent water and dirt intrusion.

The electric G-Class has built-in virtual differential locks via torque vectoring. It also features the G-ROAR sound experience which is exclusive to G-Class. There is also an advanced safety and assistance system to support drivers.

"Everybody wants one, and the waiting time is really long. It may even be the most desirable car in our portfolio," said Ola Källenius, Mercedes-Benz CEO, in a previous Decoder podcast in 2022.

The inside of the electric G-Wagen is as impressive as its exterior. The passenger grab bar is still present and it is surrounded with carbon fiber. Physical buttons and air vents are designed as tactile and circular, along with an infotainment system.
