The original image that inspired the "Backrooms" trend has finally been found after more than 20 years.
After a decade of extensive search and lore-building, user @tjxz_z posted what looks like the original photo of the infamous yellow room along with another view of the building.
According to the post, the photo was taken at a racecar hobby store in Wisconsin in 2002, nearly twenty years before the picture became associated with the horror story of liminal spaces in 2019.
The images were recovered thanks to an archived post on a "Revolution Raceway" blog post over two decades ago.
The pictures were originally part of a building tour during a renovation project to show "the extent of the water damage" in the planned racetrack for the store.
The place is located exactly at 811 Oregon St, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The poster advised people to not disturb the place as it is under private ownership.
Before the images were posted, search efforts on the original "Backrooms" image traced the photo to a 4chan post in 2011.
More Lost Media Found in 2024
Just weeks before the original "Backrooms" image was found, another historic find was reported as r/everyoneknowsthat finally identified the source of the 80s-like song, "Ulterior Motives."
User u/One-Truth-5867 reported in late April that they had finally found the source of the 17-second audio clip, a theme song from a 1986 adult film, "Angels of Passion," produced by brothers Christopher Saint and Philip Adrian Booth.

The discovery was touted as the biggest lost media find this year, at least until the "Backrooms" post.
With both the "Backrooms" and "Ulterior Motives" lost media recovered fully or partially, lost media enthusiasts are confident that more popular forgotten media may soon be recovered, including the original and unedited "Jeff the Killer" photo.
What are the 'Backrooms?'
The "Backrooms" was first popularized in 4chan in late 2019 after an anonymous user posted the image with the caption, "If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms."
The image later escaped the forum board into the mass media where it slowly gained more lore as efforts to find the original photo also began.
A film inspired by the "Backrooms" lore is currently in production under A24, directed by one of the popular storytellers of the disquieting yellow hallway, Kane Parsons.
