Sony's latest Xperia Z2 flagship is finally making a wider debut worldwide, and it's already available in the U.S. as well from a couple of retailers.
While the new Sony Xperia Z2 has already made its debut in several countries across Europe and will launch soon in Canada and India, Sony said the smartphone will not reach the U.S. until the summer. The company gave no exact launch date, but said it will release its latest flagship to U.S. consumers sometime in July.
If you don't want to wait that long to get the Sony Xperia Z2, however, you may be glad to know that a few retailers have started selling the smartphone early in the U.S., albeit for quite a steep price.
GSM Nation is currently selling the 4G LTE-enabled Sony Xperia Z2 in the U.S. for $799, and Unwired View claims it will work well with T-Mobile's and AT&T's networks. Retailer Negri Electronics is also allowing interested buyers to reserve an Xperia Z2, but for a higher price of $827.50 and with no concrete availability date.
When the Sony Xperia Z2 makes its official U.S. debut, meanwhile, it will only be available through the company's online store, and only unlocked and SIM-free. This automatically means a full retail price, because there will be no carrier subsidies to soften the blow. On the other hand, recent rumors have suggested that Sony may be working on a version of its Xperia Z2 for Verizon Wireless in the U.S. This Verizon-bound Xperia Z2, however, remains unconfirmed at this point. What is for sure is that the smartphone will become available in July from Sony's online store.
For those unfamiliar with the device, the Sony Xperia Z2 is one of the highest-end smartphones to come out this year. The handset sports a 5.2-inch full HD display with 1080p resolution, a powerful quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.3GHz, a hefty 3GB of RAM, a 20.7-megapixel rear camera and a 2.2-megapixel front shooter. A large 3,200 mAh battery will keep things up and running. On the software side, the smartphone runs Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. Just like most of Sony's latest devices, the Xperia Z2 is also dust- and water-resistant for extra durability.
When it officially hits the U.S. this summer, the Sony Xperia Z2 will likely sell for roughly the same price of the imported models. In the meantime, if you don't want to wait that long and have some extra cash laying around, you can get it now for a $799 starting price.
