Sony has just launched a new Xperia ZL2 smartphone in Japan, and the handset looks a lot like a smaller version of the flagship Xperia Z2.
The company has yet to reveal exact pricing or availability details for the Xperia ZL successor, but it has offered full spec details.
The new Xperia ZL2 is already listed on Sony's website and will also launch soon on Japanese telecom operator KDDI, but it remains uncertain at this point whether it will see a wider release in other countries as well.
It also remains unclear whether the smartphone is single- or dual-SIM, but the rest of its specifications are available. The Sony Xperia ZL comes with a 5-inch full HD LCD Triluminos display with Sony Mobile Bravia Engine 2 and X-reality, delivering a screen density of 440 ppi.
Under the hood, the handset packs the same processor found on the flagship Xperia Z2, i.e. the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974AB) clocked at 2.3GHz and paired with a hefty 3GB of RAM.
Other specs include a 20.7-megapixel rear camera with a 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS sensor with Bionz image processing, capable of recording 4K video at 3840 x 2160 pixels. The front shooter is likely a 3.1-megapixel sensor, as the listing reads 31 million pixels.
The new Sony Xperia ZL2 further comes with 32GB of internal storage capacity, as well as a microSD card slot for additional memory of up to 128GB. A large 3,000 mAh battery will provide up to 1340 minutes of continuous talk time and will juice up in roughly 150 minutes. Connectivity options, meanwhile, include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, and GPS.
As expected from a new Xperia model, the smartphone is also waterproof with IPX5/IPX8 certification and dust-proof with IP5X certification. When it comes to color options, the new Sony Xperia ZL2 will be available in white, blue, and black paint jobs.
Alongside the Xperia ZL2, Sony also launched its Xperia Z2 Tablet in Japan, bringing its latest flagship slate to the country.
