The Meta Quest 3 headset has been out for some time, but it could still benefit from a few updates from the company since there are certain features that are still not perfect. Luckily for owners, there are new additions and features for the AR/VR headset.
Meta Quest 3 Update
Previously, the device would have you pinch your fingers visibly to open its universal menu, and some say that the function is not as flawless as users would hope. The latest updates address that issue as users can now use an existing button.
When using hands to control the device, users can enable the new settings that would place a Meta button on their wrist, and pressing it would open the menu. It can be added through Settings under Experimental, as mentioned in Meta's blog post.
With the new background audio and media controls, users can now launch a music app and listen to tunes while using other apps or playing games. The universal menu will display the controls and it will no longer interrupt the other tasks that are currently active.
There have been users who complained about how the Meta Quest 3 operates in mixed reality, particularly its passthrough function. The new update claims that it will now be "more natural to interact in mixed reality" with reduced passthrough distortions and improved hand alignment.
As for users who are bothered by cluttered libraries, there is now an option that allows users to hide installed and uninstalled apps that have been downloaded from the Meta Quest Store, which can then be viewed in the dropdown menu under Hidden.
With MR games needing to register the surroundings for more realistic gameplay, Space Setup automatically identifies and marks the furniture in the environment, which includes windows, doors, tables, couches, storage, screens, and beds. Other furniture will be added over time.
Perhaps the most appreciated of all is the Sleep Mode that has been added to the power-off menu. Holding the button would show the option would leave the device to sleep. Console users can understand how useful this can be for avid users.
Choosing Sleep over totally powering the device off allows the device to run updates in the background without eating up too much battery. It would also reduce the time the Meta Quest 3 takes to turn on for quicker access when you take a short break.
A New Competitor
The updates come at a good time now that Meta is seeing a new competitor within the PC gaming market. The PlayStation VR 2 is finally getting a PC adapter that allows it to access the vast library of PC VR games.
Previously, Sony's VR headset could only run PS-exclusive games, making it extremely limited compared to other major AR/VR headset brands on the market. The adapter is now open for pre-order at $60, and it will serve as a wired connection.
Of course, many would argue that the Meta Quest 3 is still the better option, considering that the PS VR 2 costs $549.99, and that doesn't include the extra PC players have to pay for the adapter. The Meta Quest 3 already works on a PC without an adapter needed.
